Precision turned parts

Precision turned parts are parts which carry out a turning process where the centre of the lathe is used to produce solids of revolution. It can be done manually and is traditionally done on a lathe, this will require the continuous supervision of an operator, it can also be done by a computer controlled or automatic lathe which does not require this level of supervision, if they are done this way a number of machines can be running and over seen by one operator. A machine like this is referred to as a computer numerical control, which is better known as a CNC. The type of machine can be used for other types of machine tools besides a lathe. When parts are turned, a piece of wood, metal, plastic or stone is rotated and a cutting tool is traversed along 2 axes of motion this will then produce diameters and depths. CNC turning can be either the outside or the inside of a cylinder, this may also be known as boring, this will produce a tubular component. Facing is part of the turning process which will be carried out on parts, this involves moving the cutter tool across the face of the component and is performed by the cross side.
