Precision Turning

Precision turning is a turning process which is carried out on a lathe, it is where the centre of the lathe is used to produce solid of revolution. It can be done both manually and by a computer controlled or automatic lathes, it was traditional done a lathe manually this required continuous supervision by an operation. By being done on a computer controlled or automation lathe it does not require this level of supervision this means that a operation can you supervising a number of machines that are working all at the same time. A machine like this is normally referred to as a CNC known in full terms as a computer numerical control. This type of machine is not only used as a lathe but can also be used for a number of different machine tools. When the parts are turned during this process the metal is rotated and a cutting tool is used and traversed along 2 axes of motion producing diameters and depths. CNC turning can be done on both the inside and outside of the cylinder, this type of turning may always be known as boring.
